Length of breastfeeding is an individual choice. The American Academy of Pediatrics has been recommending breastfeeding for the first 2 years and beyond, for as long as it is comfortable to both mother and child.
However, the reason I threw in his age is such....the stools of a 2 year old are of fairly good size...throw in the breastmilk and they are also soft and messy. I was trying to fully express my loathing for Homeliss!
And by the way...my 2 year old does speak in full sentences. (He will actually be two next week)

: TWO?! Um, I don't know the specific protocols of the breast-feeding world, but when do folks usually stop serving from the tap, so to speak?

: You don't want a kid speaking in full sentences to be making requests along the lines of "Mother! I grow hungry. Please unsheathe your teat, that I may sup upon it. And be quick about it!"
