Your DVD player isn't cropping the image, you're TV is. All consumer television sets "overscan" the image- that is, they blow it up BEYOND the borders of the TV and crop it top-bottom-left-and right. Nowadays, sets don't do it nearly as much as they did in days gone by when the masking on TV screens was slightly "round", but it's still an issue. Having supervised video transfers for both A BETTER PLACE and a killer new transfer of BIG HELIUM DOG, I've been pretty surprised by how much picture is lost on a consumer set compared to what you can see on a non-overscanned monitor in the transfer bay. For example, I actually slightly letterboxed BIG HELIUM DOG- I zoomed out the frame so much that on the non-overscanned set I could actually see the edges of the film frame left-and-right, then I added a slight black mask to cover up the soft-edge of the film frame top/bottom. Well, on every consumer set I've watched the new BHD transfer on, you can't see the black bars AT ALL, and you certainly can't see the edges of the film frame. The same goes for A BETTER PLACE- I letterboxed it to 1.5:1, and in the transfer bay the black bars were very noticeable. On consumer sets, they are barely visible. What's happening with your DVD player is, when you shift the image left or right, you're just seeing that part of the frame that your TV set is overscanning off.

This is, like, the 8th time I've posted this friggin' question because eithers its been deleted or not answered, so here we go again: I have this option on my DVD player called "Screen Shift" where you can shift the screen more to the left, right, or directly in the middle. When I shift it to the left, you see more of the WIDESCREEN to the left. When I shift it to the right, you see more of the widescreen to the right, etc. What I wanna know is: WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS DVD PLAYER HAVE THIS?!?!? Why cant they just put the whole friggen picture on screen like everyone wants? I get kinda pissed off when I cant see the WHOLE picture, thats why I dont watch movies in standard format unless that the only format available. What I'm thinking is what you told me: How you never see the whole picture in movie theaters no matter what. So is this what the player is trying to do? Recreate a movie theater screen? Please answer me this question so I wont have to type it out for the 20th time. TOADS, please dont delete.
