Ultimately, I think it depends on the person. Some of the celebrities I've run into out in public have been really cool with being recognized and having you go over and say hi or whatever, but some haven't been too thrilled about it. Since this message board exists, this is probably the best place to make your appreciation known...and when it really comes down to it, if we didn't appreciate Mr. Smith's movies so much, we wouldn't be here, right?
When you hold someone in high esteem, like I'm sure all of us do, about the worst thing you could do is inadvertantly piss him or her off. And with the popularity of the VA movies, privacy has probably become a pretty huge commodity for Kevin, his family, and other members of the VA family.
If this board weren't around, I would have said go for it, but given the circumstances, I think you made the right choice.
But that's just my take on it.
