This has at least partially to do with the fact that the "full frame
transfer" is NOT truly full-frame. It looks like it was opened up to maybe
1.66:1 and then cropped from there. I noticed this mostly during the
opening titles- the credit "screenplay by Stanley Kubrick and Diane
Johnson" is actually partially cropped on the "full frame" transfer,
whereas on the 35mm print projected there is a nice chunk of empty space on
both sides of this credit (although oddly enough, the credit is not
perfectly centered- if I recall correctly there was less space between
"Johnson" and the edge of the frame than there was for "Stanley"- I think
the DVD looks this way too, but "Stanley" entirely on frame and "Johnson"
slightly cropp
