Hi VA world,
This is my first post so go easy on me if I make any web faux pas(s) (not sure how to make that plural). I have an issue and a favor I'd like to ask of any and all filmmakers reading this.
I started out working in film production. Lived in L.A., worked myself to death for free...yada yada. I even worked as an electrician on Glory Daze with Chris Moore, Ben Affleck, etc. Great experience! I also worked as a camera assistant, p.a, porn stand in (kidding), but now I have switched focus to sociology. I'm getting my Master's and have to write a thesis. This is where I need some help, advice, suggestions. I'm very interested in using my film background in conjunction with sociology to explore film's place in society. I am also interested in studying body image and eating disorders which I feel arise from misrepresented images of what is beautiful, and the media's influence on our notions of beauty and image. First of all, if anyone has some suggestions about issues related to this topic on which I could focus, that would be cool. I'd like to study it from a different perspective but don't know exactly which one yet. Secondly, I'd like to ask that all of you out there making films think about trying to give some exposure to other women besides size 4 super models or 6 foot tall 34-28-34's. Eating disorders are most definitely a societal issue, and everyone involved in the media is in a position to effect change.
Don't mean to rant. I just wanted to get some dialogue going about this.
Thanks.
