Makes sense that there is no logical reason we are to assume "monkey" refers to Suzanne. I even asked the question earlier if this was a reference to Suzanne, but there is no reason it needs to be. We (I and us) maybe assume too much. I am not a comic fan and haven't read any of the VA related comics. I do remember the monkey in Mallrats though. It was funny. There are certain things in this world that are just plain funny. Monkey is one of those things.
Whether it's the word or an image, it's funny and catchy. Webmonkey.com is a good example. Drunk Monkey is a term we have all probably used before. Obviously Spanking the Monkey. The original poster's handle of Mr Killmonkey. "beat you like a circus monkey" (a personal favorite). Monkey shit, though not used extensively is funny. The video on the internet we have all seen of the monkey picking it's ass, smelling it, then passing out. These are all funny.
Monkey is a good word, a funny word. Good for referring to almost anything. In this case, the film industry, or the process of making a film. Behold the monkey, for it is good! Praise be to monkey!

: It seems to be a pretty obvious reference to the popular term "Spanking the Monkey."
: So, perhaps Kevin chose to call the column "developing the monkey" because:
: a. In both film and the comic book industry, developing a prject can take FOREVER. Kevin's column is presumedly going to be about developing his films/comics and his opinions on developments in both industries.
: b. it's a reference to a very well-regarded independent movie, which is how he got his start.
: c. it's a quick, goofy whackin' off joke
: I think it's ridiculous to assume that every time Kevin uses the word "monkey" that he's referring to Suzanne in Mallrats. The monkey had like 30 seconds of screentime, no one outside of this board would get the reference, and he already wrapped up the Suzanne story for all us geeks in his comic book. Believe me, the non-comic buying pubic has abolsutely no memory of the monkey in Mallrats.
: Sheesh! The fucking Zapruder film didn't get this much scrutiny. Go take a walk, guys, and pretend you're human.
