I don't think Cameron can make a bad movie. Granted, the teenie-boppers are responsible for making Titanic the highest grossing movie of all time, but without them it still would have been succesful (just to a lesser degree). And, honestly, Titanic is really good. I hate when something enjoys so much commercial success that lots of "underground" fans say they hate it, simply because it was commercial, or because the Abricrombie and Fytch crowd liked it. Maybe you really didn't like it, okay, but I know people who would have liked had it not been so commercial.
As for Mallrats, the critics always bash sensless comedies. Mallrats wasn't meant to have a plot and a higher message about human nature, but the critics wanted one to be there. So rather than taking it for what it was - a movie whose sole purpose is to make you laugh - they tried to make it something else in their eyes. When it didn't fit what they expected, they dissed it. Honestly, EVERYONE I show Mallrats to (except ONE person) thinks it's funny as hell. It's also the first VA film I saw, and the one responsible for making me a fan... you're not alone :)

: For Me, I Now don't belive one word a critic says. For example, just before Titanic came out critics were like "It's gonna bomb, it's terrible". Then it makes money and they are like "10 thumbs up, and the best movie of all time bullshit." If It wasn't for those teenie boppers, Titanic the movie would be with the real Titanic.
