The VHS is a fll-frame extraction from the Super-35 negative- you are seeing picture above and below (mostly below) that WAS NOT in the theatrical prints. This picture information was never meant to be seen- the film is meant to be seen matted to the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. These aren't "mistakes" because when the movie was being filmed, all the monitors on set were matted to 2.35:1, and that's what Kevin was watching. Whoever did the pan-and-scan video transfer wasn't paying enough attention and let some stuff be seen that was never meant to be seen. Those shots should have been zoomed in.

I swear, if I don't do something around here, it gets all fucked up...
