You are correct. The "dirt mall" was the Rt. 1 Flea Market in Edison, NJ. It has since been torn down and on that location stands the Loews New Brunswick theaters. Even though the flea market didn't have much worth while, it was fun to go walk around there every now and then. Everytime I see that scene from Rats I can't help but miss the flea market just a little bit. (Especially since the new theater is way too overpriced and usually too crowded.)
