: I admit, I don't know what 'colon closed bracket' means, but it seems to diffuse a lot of heated situations around these parts. I saw it used in the House of Lords the other day. Sir David Minkie had just creased his brow in rage at the suggestion that he had had more than his fair share of Mr. Kiplings exceedingly good Fondant Fancies at the Royal Garden Party the week before, when the instigator of the claim, Lady Fatima Whitbread, held up a piece of cardboard with a big colon and closed bracket painted on in lipstick, at which point Sir Minkie gave a little shrug and wry smile, and sat back down.

: Ah, the power of words. Well... the power of punctuation, at any rate.
