: : I thought that the color of many of the outdoor shots was very saturated, especialy at the beginning of the film. Is this the case or was it just the nature of the 16mm film?
: : If you did intend to over-saturate the colors of some scenes do you consider that "imposing" yourself on the location or rather the locations real look that could only be brought out in that way? Film never does life justice in my opinion.
: Actually, we did bring up the color satursation in a lot of the outdoor shots via the use of ND-9 filters- basically, depending on the density of the filter (I think they go ND-3, ND-6, and then ND-9), you can increase the color saturation and contrast a little or a lot, and we used the highest (ND-9), so we were really bringing up the color saturation and contrast for a lot of those outdoor scenes (especially at the end).
: I don't consider that imposing myself on the location, or overthinking it- that came out on set, we had the filters, the DP said, "Hey, do you want this really contrasty and saturated?" I said, "Sure", and we went with it. What I meant by "imposing ourselves on the locations" is like, say if before I shot the scene I said "This tree represents hope, so we'll have this shot happen here- however, these leaves represent saddness, so we'll have something bad happen here, and the ants represent the eternal struggle for the heart of mankind..."- stuff like that, overintelectualizing it.
: : Another question that I have to ask but won't expect an answer to is, Based on Ryan's rant at the beach, do you believe in god? Or rather, were you also questioning his existance? If it helps to make the question seem more fair, I don't believe anymore.
: I believe in God although I think religion is bad. I wrote Ryan to reflect what I believed as a teenager- I did go through an atheist period, and put that into his character. He doesn't believe in God because of the awful things he's seen.
