Had McCain chosen to run as an Independent, would you have voted for him given pervasive "wasted vote" arguments?
If he did not stand a chance, and he had no base of support, then NO, I would have voted for whomever I felt had a likely chance of winning, and held more views that tended to agree with my own about freedoms, national security, and America's role in the world. It would kill me to do it, but I feel that I owe America that personal pain; the country, its well being, and continued health are more important than my "voting my conscience."
I submit two things, however, into this arguement. Number one, if he HAD run independent, he would have siphoned off almost half of Bush's votes, and have handed the presidency to Gore.
And 2, considering who he is, and how he loves and serves his country, he would NEVER run as a divisive third party candidate, knowing that to do so is placing your own ego, and self-interests over the interests and good of the country.
Consider your convictions carefully.
