First of all the argument that you shouldn't vote for a candidate becuase he has no shot of winning is ridiculous and Gore supporters who made that argument are both wasting their breath and not putting their best foot forward because there are plenty of other very good reasons not to vote for Nader.
I say that the argument that you shouldn't vote for Nader because he had no chance of winning is ridiculous and it's also important to note that the opposite is ridiculous as well...that being that you should vote for Nader becuase he's got no chance of winning. Now I know that most Nader supporters didn't actually have that idea in their heads but that is in fact exactly what they were doing. Most didn't even concider what he would have done as president. The fact that Nader would not have been capeable of accomplishing all of the great things he said he would is very rellevant and most often overlooked by his supporters.
I said on another board that a president should be willing to compromise and got flamed by Nader fans saying:
So you think the fact that someone doesn't stand up for what they believe is a good thing.
Well DAMN RIGHT I DO. When someone is president they are most certainly going to be met with a ton of opposition in trying to get things done from people who don't believe the same as he. Do you want a president who is going to foolshly stand by all of his convictions and not back down or do you want one who will actually GET THINGS DONE. Nader's platform was very pretty and a lot of us Gore supporters believe that Nader's stance on the issues is way better than Gore's. However Nader's stances are for the most part unrealistic. Not a surprise since Nader could be as unrealisitic and idealisitic as he wanted becuase he knew that he'd never have to put his money where his mouth is so to speak. He was never going to have to follow through with any of the things he said. He could, and did, promise things that he could never accomplish.
So when people voted for Nader based on the issues they were in essence voting for Nader becuase he didn't have a chance at winning. They weren't thinking about whether or not he'd be an effective president. They were believing a fairy tale, believing that if Nader got elected he'd be able to do those things. They'd go one about his honesty and integrity and how he stands up for his convictions. Not thinking when he's net with opposition which ones will he abandon to get others through, in fact loving the fact that he wouldn't back down on any of them. People who voted for Nader only looked at one side of the coin.
The two sides of how to decide who to vote for are these:
1)Do you believe in the platform, the stance on the issues.
2)Do you think that candidate would be effective (are they qualified).
Nader had the first but not the second.
Yes Gore's stance is way closer to the middle, yes his ideals are watered down in comparison to Nader, but he has good ideas AND he'd be able to get things done. The fact that he says he's going to do less than Nader on certain issues is what makes him a realistic choice and Nader a fairy tale.
As for those who voted for Nader purely becuase they are sick of the 2 party sytem, that IS a dumb reason to vote for anyone. You should only vote for someone who you think is the best person for the job.
As for what you said about if Gore loses this election he's got no one to blame but himself. You are right becuase his campaign never said what I just said. They said Don't vote for Nader because it ensures a Bush victory when they should have said don't vote for Nader becuase he's not the best man for the job.
: I didn't vote for Gore because he stands for just about everything I despise. He's for hire just as much as Bush is, only he won't admit it to our faces.
: I didn't throw the baby down the stairs. Not in the least. I was the one trying to put up one of those little baby gates. If the baby fell down the stairs it's because the middle of the US decided that it might be fun to play toss with her as the ball.
: If Gore loses this election he's got no one to blame but himself. He catered to the right wing as much as he could, and simply took the left for granted. Did he really think he'd have our vote with a platform that emphasized a bigger military budget than Bush? Or by supporting the utterly mindless war on drugs, or by renegging on just about every environmental promise he's ever made? Gore simply didn't deserve my vote, it's as simple as that. And if Bush gets elected, then it's his own damn fault.
: I'm surprised at you Dobbin. I took you for someone who stood up for what he believed, instead of caving into the blandness of the middle.

: really still just horrified that nearly half of this country thinks that Bush is the guy they want making decisions for them.
