But it was DEFINITELY an EA sports game originally. However, during post-production somebody got the bright idea to shill for Sega Sports, so the Sega hockey game was substituted for the '93 or '94 EA Sports Hockey. The beloved EA Sports. The deal was that the Sega Sports Tour (yes, there really was such a thing) would shill for the movie in return for the product placement.
Oddly enough, though, Sega didn't wind up promoting Mallrats at all, and they'd turned their backs on EA for nothing at all. Sad, sad caper, in the words of Hootie.
There you go, and now you know the deal.
