I assume the practice started in America as I've never heard of it elsewhere, but at Easter some people hide easter eggs for their kids to find.
On a DVD an easter egg is an added extra that is hidden somewhere on the disc as opposed to just being selectable on a menu.
e.g. On The Stoned Age, if you keep moving down the menu there is a little TRIMARK logo at the bottom. This can be highlighted and a hidden trailer for Sprung is played if selected.
