I think part of the problem is that, typically, the Academy Awards have been the awards least swayed by consumer preference and box office grosses (of course there are many exceptions, I'm just speaking in general). Where awards shows like MTV and Blockbuster seemed to go based more on box office gross and brand name value. And for the Academy Awards to have Gladiator as their current Best Picture contender shows how the awards business is becoming a direct parallel to the movie business in many instances. I'm not ganging up on Gladiator, I thought it was a great movie, but it was essentially Russell Crowe's movie with spectacular action sequences and an incidental plot. But once enough people started whispering it about the Golden Globes, it just seemed to snowball. I still don't know in a best ensemble picture grudge match between Traffic and Almost Famous who would win, but I know its the correct matchup.

Still smarting from that debocle where Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan . . .
: Perhaps AF will get recognized by some other award shows. Maybe MTV or the People's Choice awards will actually give credit where credit's due. When will these award shows get a category for Best Ensamble Cast? AF would have it in the bag...
