Well, I feel that Kevin's directoral control definitely has a lot to do with the overall way the movies come out. If someone else were directing his films, I don't doubt that they would be quite different and maybe even not as good since, though the dialogue is great no matter what, the nuance provided by directing the actors is often what makes the appeal of Kevin Smith's films stand out to a certain group of people. A director not involved in the comic business or who knows little of the generally geeky fanboy world would no doubt not have the experience to give us the familiar feel of fellow geeks.
That isn't to say, though, that a script written by Kevin and directed by someone else would be bad, just different. As to you wondering if it will ever happen, I don't doubt it since Kevin has already taken and considered many jobs as purely a writer. I'm sure as he moves into his more adult fare, he will be writing movies but not directing them as the studios may be looking for greater visual style on something that isn't the vulgar comedies Smith is currently known for. Up to this point, Kevin's visual style, in my opinion, is perfect for the character driven stories he's made. If he were to make something more action oriented or more epic, then perhaps someone with more extravagance would be required, though personally I think Kevin could do just fine in such a situation with the help of a good cinematographer.
In any case, I know I'm not Kevin Smith, but I'm just putting my two cents in. Overall, I think Smith's direction on his movies thus far has been great and could use little to no improvement that would necessarily make any sort of positive impact on the film. But were his Superman script ever to make the screen, should he direct it? Maybe not since it would be a more commercial venture.
