Dreamworks only had so much money, and they obviously felt that they had to really push "The Contender" on the Academy, I guess to justify it somehow. Between that and Gladiator, they must have blown their Oscar promotion budget, so Cameron Crowe had to rely on word of mouth.
I'm just being cynical because of how shitty the Oscars are this year. Don't worry, Jason, if he never wins, he'll join illustrious company, like Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. I'd assume that someday he'll have to get a screenplay one at least, though. While personally I saw movies this year that I thought were better than Almost Famous, most of them weren't nominated for Best Picture either. Don't worry, lately, it's cooler to big ignored, I think.
