I think the first thing you should know about Kevin Smith is that he doesn't buy into that whole "auteur" film-maker thing. That is why you never see "A KEVIN SMITH FILM" in the credits to any of his flicks... so if you need to write about an "auteur" you've picked the wrong man!!!
