How did Mallrats end up being filmed in Minnesota?

I've always wondered, out of all the places in the country, all the malls, how on earth was it decided that MallRats was filmed in Minnesota? If you haven't already figured it out, I want to know because I in fact live in Minnesota and have been to Eden Prarie Center, although now its completely re-modeled, and sadly looks nothing like it did when it was used in Mallrats.
