Just to let you know, my roomate is a stockbroker and my girlfriend is a fully funded English grad student (eng comp). The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh (where she is attending) has many problems...most of which are the petty nature of many who are involved with it. From the stories I've heard, I'm guess that most departments are like this. My girlfriend hates it and has been driven so far as to be leave English all together after she gets her masters and is getting a masters in Education next rather than presuing a pHD in English. My roomate on the other hand is having a great time as a broker. He doesn't do much and has more money than he knows how to put to good use (though he's no where near Boiler Room wealth). I say go into the brokerage firm, get all your certifications (i.e. series 7) and if you have the time and money down the line go after your MFA. Consider also the prospect of making as much as you will writing as you will in the market. I hope my experience with this stuff helps.
