I think he meant that it wouldn't be following the same storylines as the original Superman movies, it would be a Superman 1 rather than a Superman 5. The one doesn't necessarily make it come chronologically before the other Supermans, but it would be the first in a new line of Superman movies. Think Spiderman, Web of Spiderman, and Amazing Spiderman. All Spiderman books, but different numbering systems.
Can't believe I just used comic books to make a point, oh well.
: Kevin's Superman 5 draft was suppossed to follow films 1-4. It can be noticed because Louis Lane and Superman are a couple in the script. In the movies, it couldn't take place before the first film, cause she didn't even know Clark was Superman until the sequel. The script also descriped Superman dressed as "90's style."
