Substance shmubtance! I keep saying this over and over, but no one listens! Leave the Oscars to the high falutin snooty people with talent. Take advantage of your youth and just write what you'd want to see, what makes you laugh, cry, enraged... If you keep comparing yourself to Kevin Smith, Alan Ball, Cameron Crowe or anyone you respect/put on a pedestal, you will achieve nothing but form inferiority complexes. Do what you think YOU are the master at, not a genre that's been tackled and mastered already. We don't need the next Good Will Hunting making it big, we need the next Schueller Bob Hunting to make it big. Get a good story done from start to finish in your head, then do it how you think YOU would do it if you could. Kevin ain't gonna do it, no one is. So quit comparing yourself to anyone else but your past self. See if your stuff is better than stuff from a year ago.
And yes, as you get older and gain more visceral life experience, it gets easier to write, because you'll have more points of view to look at characters from. Plus you'll form new ideas and perceptions of what you think you have worked out on your current writings. So just write what you would like to see, and compare it only to your past attempts to insure you're getting better. As you grow older, it should improve in quality.
