We don't say aboot, we say about, americans say abaout, so when we say about it sounds like aboot because they're used to pronouncing it with the "A" sound in it. A few other words we say different are hockey (hackey), out(aout), and house (haouse).
There's an International hockey camp (British, Scottish, American; just to name a few of the dudes hanging out there) up near where I live and we've experimented a lot with the accent game.
