I'm a theatre-degreed folksinging part-time scenic artist recently returned
to school to learn & teach some seriously undertaught American history.
A buddy of mine graduated from my alma mater, did three years @ Rutgers for
his acting MFA, moved to LA, got an agent & a manager & a union card, went
to auditions, got cast, did good work with an easy attitude, got a little
mo' goin'--and now he (& thousands like him) are suffering a virtual
lockout preluding SAG's & AFTRA's contracts' expiration.
Mr. Smith's opinion of a nameless showbiz superconglomerate is pretty clear
(and particulary regarding a certain thin-mustachioed lawyer), but I'd
dearly love to know what any and all at AV have to say about the current
labor situation. In my rich fantasy life, Michael Moore would follow Jay &
Silent Bob around Hollywood with a camera as they try start or join up
picket lines--but I'll take whatever feedback I can get.
(My buddy's name is Victor McCay--his best gig this year was on that awful
Ally show, playing the fat bald rich client whose insecurity allows Downey
to bully him into a prenup that nearly wrecks his engagement; he'd give a
nut to work on a Kevin Smith film. Stumping for him here is TOTALLY unpro,
but when your best bud busts thirty and suddenly can't get work you've
