Kevin,
I was reading the most recent issue of Flaunt Magazine (with the Ethan Suplee interview) and there was a fascinating article on artist Norbert Kox. His work is religious and controversial, and tends to upset the Catholic Church. I really liked the following quote:
"Growing up I was taught that the Catholic religion was the only true religion," Kox begins, "but when I started to study the Bible - and I believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God - I saw contradictions in the Catholic doctrine. I had to make a choice, and I chose to go with the scriptures. In my paintings, oftentimes, I reveal where the scripture contradicts either Catholicism or modern day Christianity, and then I portray these contradictions in the paintings. That's what riles people up and causes them to get angry."
I was wondering if you're familiar with Kox's work, and what you think of it. I find it interesting that you confronted these contradictions in the church while embracing Catholicism while his confrontation of these contradictions has led to his rejection of Catholicism. In any event, it's an interesting read if you get the chance (surely you've got some studio flunkies who can pick up magazines for you while you're busy editing?).
Also in the issue is an article on the cartoon/band the Gorillaz. New to me - anyone heard/seen their stuff? It's really interesting - the lead singer of Blur, Dan the Automator, Jamie Hewlett and Del the Funkee Homosapien are a cartoon band that puts out real albums and does actual live shows. Seems to be more a British thing than an American thing right now - anyone from that side of the pond care to comment?
