Film schools, or even universities with a film program, are the best places to get access to free equiptment. It also gives you a chance to polish your skills in the "where to point the camera" (cinematography), "I can't see shit through this lense" (lighting), and "Oops, I forgot to use a changing bag for the film, is that bad?" (general background knowlege). If you want to make a true indie flick, just take the lab classes (if you can) and tell the teachers to fuck off when they try to teach you style. However, as the old saying goes, "You should first learn the rules before you break the rules."

Another way if you're too young to go to school yet or just don't have the money is to hang around at the school and meet people. Student filmmakers ALWAYS need help on their movies. Everything from actors to cameramen to "go get me the gaffer's tape" people. Help them out, keep your mouth shut, and learn. Plus, you might make from friends that are willing to help you down the line as well.
