That's cool, Gizmo is where we recorded the commentaries for both MALLRATS and DOGMA, and that's also where I compiled the deleted scenes for DOGMA. My Gizmo baseball cap is my favorite :-)
As for your AVID question, yes, it's very similar to Final Cut Pro/Premiere. You do your initial editing at a very low resolution, and after finalizing you usually do an on-line tape-to-tape edit using the EDL list from the AVID (if you're completing on tape, that is).
