That laughing "fit" lasted all of about two seconds, not enogh time for him to run into the church, get a clean soul, run back out and get killed by the cops. Besides, how do you know that God wasn't just hanging out behing the doors, waiting for the dramatic entrance *right* before Bartleby opens the doors? For an omnipotent being, the microseconds between Bethany pulling the plug, and Bartleby getting to the church is enough time to get from the hospital to the church and still have a few more microseconds of prep time before Bartleby opens the doors.
