I don't know about Kevin Smith, but I think that directors like their actors to stick to the script, which is the reason why there are continuation person (I don't really know the official term !). I suppose that with great pro, dir allow them to jam. But if you pay attention to that fact, most comedy flicks don't have an amazingly subtel plot, so the comic effects are more important and can cause some impro. But with Kevin's flicks, there's a story behind the jokes. But, the actors and he probably know more aout it than I do ! Stil, that's what I think about it.
