But no direct experience of them as they were. David and Teddy met them, lived with them, etc. They're not looking for the existense of humans or general information on them... they're looking for mankind's deepest secrets because they believe that mankind had the key to the meaning of existence.
Because we created them. The same way we search for the God we believe created us.
Gigalo Joe had the answer for it... combine his quote on religion with his quote on how mechas would control the planet... and mix in the way the super-mechas acted mechanically (interfacing with David, the cold didn't hurt them) then you have the answer that they are obviously not aliens.
I think people are just looking at textual evidence to convince them that they're aliens... but the thematic evidence screams that they are mechas, searching for their God...
