Well, I registered here a long time ago, so long ago that I don't even remember when it was. I forgot about posting here and just simply let real life concerns take over. So with the upcoming release of "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back" (which looks hilarious from the trailers I've seen, by the way), I decided to come back to the View Askewniverse since I am going back to school to study film.
First of all, let me just say that I just recently saw "Chasing Amy" for the first time -- I was hesitating on seeing that one for the longest time for whatever reason, but I finally went out and rented it this afternoon when I was doing my errands. I just absolutely loved this film -- there were things in that movie that just touched me deeply regarding my own relationships and how they related to what these characters were going through, and I almost cried in more than one scene in the movie. Also, I thought that the whole idea of a black gay guy having to pretend he was some Malcolm X-type in order to present an image for his comic was a riot.
I hope with my own movies I can bring this much depth and emotion to my own characters.
I also just recently saw "Mallrats" again -- I forgot how funny this movie actually was. I hadn't seen it in a long time, so my memory was fuzzy on a few plot points (I think I missed a lot of the jokes the first time around and wasn't even thinking about the connections between this and "Clerks" at the time). But overall, I thought it was really funny (and you guys commentary was even funnier :-) ).
"Clerks" was one of those movies that I also identified with the first time I saw it, only because at the time I first saw the movie my brother and I were both working in a convienience store in my local town. He brought the movie home one night, and we were laughing like crazy because WE KNEW PEOPLE WHO WERE JUST LIKE THOSE CUSTOMERS! I own a copy on video, and want to get the DVD once the price goes down (as much as I love the movie, $35 is too much to pay for a one disk collector's edition, IMO. If it was 2 disks I can see paying that much).
"Dogma" is one of those movies where I just went to see it just to see if it was as bad (sacreligiously, not artistically) as some people claimed. And being a Christian, myself, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't against faith, but actually celebrated it. It allows you to question some things about what the Bible says and actually encourages you to read it and make your own judgements (one of the things mentioned in the movie -- whether Jesus had any brothers and sisters -- was actually a topic of discussion between my father and grandfather/his father-in-law one night). Although some of the theology was off (muses are in Greek mythology, for example), I didn't take it seriously and thought the movie was funny and thought provoking.
Overall, as you can see, I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith. :-) I can't wait for the release of "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back". Even though they won't be around anymore after this film, they'll live on in celluloid (and on video and DVD). :-)
Snootchie Bootchies. :-)
