I just got back from "Scary Movie 2" here in Miami and the reaction was less than enthusiastic. I mean, I think "Bubble Boy" got bigger laughs. However, I have theories about this.
A) Age - About 40% of the audience was under the age of 12 (yeah, NO KIDDING!! At an R FILM!!!). So they laugh at slapstick but anything that requires thought makes them play with their popcorn and spit.
B) Crazy Cubans - I'd say about 85% of the audience had a barely functional grasp of the English Language so a whole lot of jokes SAILED over their heads. I don't know how they expected to get the jokes of SM2 (before any of you tag me as racist, I'm Cuban. But I speak English far better than I do Spanish).
C) Hollywood = ? - Lets be honest, with A and B, you're guaranteed they won't get a crack about Miramax, George Lucas, Ben Affleck or George Carlin. People are stupid.
So what did get big laughs? Jay's reaction to Shannon Elizabeth (a sight-gag), the bluntsaber (a sight gag) and when Chris Rock showed up ("Ay! Mira! Es el negro comico!" - That's not an exaggeration). But then, I don't think my theater was filled with Kev's main viewing audience. They would all be at the theater closer to the University I attend. And to be honest, my Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back shirt gets a more welcome applause there than anything else. I swear, if one more frat guy drags me around to show off my shirt to his brothers....
Why can't the sorority girls do that? *sigh*
Still, me and my buddy Mike loved it.
