One thing- did Kevin say it sucked? I'm surprised, as A.I. has a lot to say about God's relationship to his creations (I think a lot of viewers missed this point in the ending, with the Super-Mecha searching for answers re: their "creators"- Man). Having followed the development of the project for years, I agree re: Kubrick looking down and smiling. With some monor variations, Speilberg stayed pretty faithful to Kubrick's intentions.
One interesting point- over at alt.movies.kubrick, some tool wrote that A.I.'s lack of spectacular box-office results is some sort of vindication of the view among certain Kubrick fanboys that Spielberg "raped" Kubrick's vision. My response to said poster: "Oh yeah, because as we all know EYES WIDE SHUT just DOMINATED the box-office charts for MONTHS." Seriously, the response to A.I. among critics and audiences is almost EXACTLY THE SAME as the response has been to Kubrick's last several movies. That alone should quiet those who say that Speilberg watered down Kubrick's ideas.
Steven did Stanley good with A.I., and even if it doesn't make hundreds of millions at the box-office, it's a film that will be remembered.
