I saw A.I. on the 4th. I thought it was visually stunning, absolutely beautiful. I also cried like tissues (or, in my case, movie theatre napkins) were going out of style. I never said it was crap; for the visuals alone, it was worth seeing in the theatres, though I can't say I thought it was worth $8.75. But what I DID think was that it was manipulative, and kind of weak, with (and I've heard this referenced in many reviews) several annoying false endings. Mostly it was the manipulativeness that bothered me, though. You've got to feel sorry for Haley Joel Osment; he's being utilized as the most pitiful-looking kid in Hollywood. C'mon, who WOULDN'T feel sorry for a kid that looks that pitiful, that's so inhumanly adorable and yet put into these horribly traumatic situations? They're setting this kid up for a Macauley Culkin-style fall, here. I'm not saying anyone had to sell their soul to get their grosses up on A.I.; the foundation for a good film really is there. In the end, though, as stunning as it was, it was rather alot like paying $9 to see Pinocchio.
