When Clerks came out, I was a clerk in a used bookstore. It was a very sort of bohemian, laid-back place (imagine the store in High Fideltiy, only books, not records), and my job consisted mainly of listening to music, smoking cigarettes, deciding where to order food from, eating said ordered food, talking on the phone, and being of no help whatsoever to the customers. The store was loosely organized into sections, and vaguely alphabetical within that, but other than pointing someone in the general direction of the section they needed, there was little I could do to actually help them find books. My best friend worked there with me, and when she and I went to see Clerks, we could not stop laughing, so closely did it mirror our lives.
I worked in a video store in Manhattan, too, but it was nowhere near as fun. Though lots of famous people had accounts there, so every so often you'd get to see someone well-known, or look up their rental history. Sadly, I have no juicy tidbits to relate from that.
Ah, golden, misspent youth.
