: The only ignorant comment he made was that he doesn't read comic books. A great majority of his work is OBVIOUSLY influenced by comic books...hell, Monkey Bone was based on a comic, and Batman IS a comic. He's got the goth/noir stuff down, which is indicative of a popular genre of comics...so I don't know what he's saying.
The only connection he has to MONKEY BONE is that Henry Selick directed both MONKEY BONE and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and Burton developed and produced the latter film.
As far as Batman goes, well, I don't think a guy actually needs to read a lot of comics to make his version. Clearly the specific looks of Batman, the Joker and what have you were influenced by the comics, but he didn't write the story and the look and feel veers off from the look and feel of most comic book versions by a mile.
I think the goth/noir feel you're getting at can as easily be influenced by cinema – in fact, the same cinematic schools that influenced those comics – literature, etc. I don't think it can be held up as any kind of real evidence. You do know that the comic books didn't develop that entirely out of the ether, right?
Anyway, it didn't read to me that he'd never perused a funny book at some point, but merely that he doesn't currently read them. Seems perfectly plausible to me.
