The very fact that you mentioned. The contestants are not KILLED ON SIGHT.
They are not playing for their lives but for attention and cash.
It's interactive. It might be entertaining.
But it also won't be on the excitement scale of the book by richard bachman. If you read the book, you would realize that you will not see, COPS fried by a grenade in a series of pipes in a buildings basement. You will not see a man who has been gutted steer an airplane into the studio headquarters.
Also these people choose to do this though their own free will...and the FREEVEE has not yet come to pass that televisions are mandatory in all homes and watched.
Likewise Ben and Matt will not be killing the wife and daughter of said contestants to spur them on.
Think about the chase scene in UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. That was for real.
Now how could king ever think of writing something about something so similar?
Answer as every English Professor in history has known, King himself included.
THERE ARE ONLY about 6 PLOTS out there. Everything else is just manipulating the details.
