Or even perhaps started an innocent consversation with the man, geefully ignoring what he said up until that point: "Are you on holiday too? I'm from xxx, pleasure to meet you!". And then to have simply talked with him as if he hadn't heard a word, being as cordial as is humanly possible.
That's "class" to me! :)
But, hey, that's just my opinion! :)
