People in Kevin's circle of friends worked at a youth centre... this weird kid Mewes was becoming a legend down there for his energy and oddity... they started all hanging out. When Kevin wrote the script for Clerks, he wrote a part capitalizing on the sonicboom that was his young friend Mewes.
