I haven't read the original Planet of the Apes novel (1953), but I have read ABOUT it, and what I read about it describes an ending that is very much like what we see in the Tim Burton movie... a monkey in the Lincoln Memorial.
So it wouldn't be suprising if some Kevin Smith cartoonist also read the novel and used that ending too.
