Having read Paul's letter to...erm...oh, I don't know - Romans or Corinthians or someone, it seems quite obvious that he was a grumpy and repressed man who couldn't get laid, so he decided to preach against anyone having sex either.
Once again, certain religious laws come down to pure self-interest of those who make them. To be quite frank, the most important bit of the Bible can be summed up in the following sentence:
"Be excellent to each other!".
