Folks,
Well I've decided to leave my monotonous 9-5 computer job and do what I've always wanted....film editing. My question to those with an opinion (which is all I'm sure) is: knowing what you know, which of these options would you suggest.
1) Putting two, four, or more years in to a higher institution towards a film degree of sorts.
or
2) Trying to become an intern/apprentice for an editor and work my way up.
As of now, I'm leaning toward the second choice for two major reasons. It seems to me that once you finish the degree program you have to start at the "grunt" level anyway, so why not start four years earlier? And aren't most film schools either geared to either Actors or Directors and they only offer one or two editing classes? Or is it wise to focus as a director in order to be a better editor. The only worry about the second situation is that I'll only be trained on a NL system and I'll never be able to get into 16mm or 35mm...and therefore severely limit my future possibilities.
Sorry for the huge post, but hopefully someone can help. Also...let me know if I should post this at an earlier hour if it will get a better response. Thanks for your help.
