But it ultimately came down to budget.

As it happens, they had already considered doing it in black & white for artistic reasons earlier.

It was shot on black and white film, so there is no color. The only way to release it in color would be to use that ungodly system of putting pastel colors over everything and giving everyone the same skin tone. I think a number of us here would be very annoyed by such a thing.

Luckily, back when Kevin was considering "Clerks 2: Hardly Clerkin'", he was planning to do it in black and white as well, to match the original, so I think he's committed to it as a black and white film.
