Because they were both human when they died, but had not passed threw the arch. God didn't let them in to heaven but instead will make them wait till judgement day to stand with the rest of humanity in judgement. In other words, because they weren't sin free but in God's good favors (not the best choice of word, but you know what I mean), God sent them to purgatory and not Hell.
