First of all, "good" and "bad" movies are a product of your own opinion. And second, Kevin Smith sets the visual aspect of the movie as he sees fit. What's wrong with making your movie look at least half decent if you have the money to do it? I'm sure if he could do Clerks in color, he would. Who cares? Kevin Smith's strongest point is his writing and he lets it shine through in fuckin' bushels. I'll take a line like "Oh what a lovely tea party" over a CGI dinosaur any fuckin day of the week. But that's just me. And also, people change. Why wouldn't he want to move away from Clerks and Chasing Amy? That's why Zeppelin stopped playing Stairway, cause as creative people they chose to move on. Clerks is a legacy, not a movie blueprint. I can't wait to see what he can come up with next. So you shouldn't dwell on Clerks, but, hey, what the fuck do you know? =)
