: I was disappointed with this flick. The problem I am having with the fans who so enjoyed this movie is that the basic defense propounded is "some things are funny and you just don't get it. Kevin was making a flat out comedy without any redeeming social value or critical thought."
I saw a lot of thought behind it. It was something of a mirror of Kevin Smith's life, how he started out in New Jersey, moved to Hollywood, and made an impact there on his own. Social value? It satirized a lot of things that just ain't satarized enough, such as the Sexy Ninja Leather Chicks.
: I don't believe such a thing for a second. No "independent filmmaker" spends twenty million dollars without having some vision in mind. I think that the execution was not there in this movie. And, c'mon, Jason Mewes has a difficult time carrying a movie.
I'd have to disagree with you there. I was VERY critical of Mewes' performance, and went in to the theatre expecting him to just fall flat, and I further expected the picture to suck because of that. I was pleasantly surprised to see him in such a strong and compelling lead. Differing opinions here, I s'pose.
: With a nearly mute "Silent Bob" as a lead, there's no decent bantering between the main characters, the type of which shines in all other View Askew films. Yes, there were alot of jokes, but I can't believe Kevin thought sketch-comedy material and stand up routines would suffice as a movie.
That was something that I missed from other VA flicks. I was happy to see all plot, though. It was something new for Kev, really.
: We all believe Kevin is very thoughtful and quick-witted, so I can't defend this movie by saying it was supposed to be so dumb. That doesn't say much for Kevin or the viewer.
People said the same thing about Mallrats, too. *shrug* Kev said that J&SBSB wasn't for everybody.
