Dear Kevin and View Askew peeps...
This will be my first post anywhere to anything. I usually ignore message boards, chat room, etc. I don't usually care whether or not my opinion is heard, since to most people one voice doesn't matter. And you would think with the HUGE fanbase you've got here, my voice will probably seem even smaller. But I don't give a Sh*t. I have got to add my 2 cents.
Disclaimer: Most references to "Kevin Smith" actually include the entire View Askew staff and anyone who helps bring the movies, comics, etc. out. I'm not hailing Kevin specifically as a single genius, so much as a part of a great team of creative people. On with the Show....
I love Kevin Smith's work. I saw the new movie opening weekend, and I'm so damned happy with it, I could piss myself. (incidentally, I was the only person who stayed to see Alanis' re-appearance after the credits. It was a really sweet touch, and I told all the people coming in for the next showing, to stay for the credits.)
I could go on for hours about how "cool" the flicks are, or how he's really "tapped into" a growing subculture of fans.... But f*ck it. Here's why I like Kevin Smith's work.
Kevin's come up from the bottom, doing only what he loved to do. He had an idea (or several), and he followed his dreams. He really is an example of the notion that with dreams, anything is possible. Sure, he's had to make concessions along the way, but nobody can accuse View Askew of selling out for fame.
(though let's be honest, a good deal of the success is luck- Jay & Bob found a niche', and f*ckin' everybody likes them, even if they don't like the movies. A lot of the commercial success is due to those 'little stoners'.)
They got a real budget this time, they could've made almost any kind of movie they wanted. They made a movie pretty much for them, and us. Anyone who's seen Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back knows, it was almost all in-jokes, and made very much for the fans.
So from a loyal fan, before these freaks were anybodies, Please keep doing what you do. Your success is inspiration to artists, writers, and hell even little stoner geeks everywhere that you can do something with your life, and have a good time while you're at it.
Thanks. Special K.
