I can't imagine that Smith is so asinine as to "hate" another director based on his work. Nor do I think the V.A. crew "loathed" Magnolia. I mean, personally, I didn't care for it - it's not my style - but even *I* didn't LOATHE it. I save that for flicks like Batman and Robin.
As for Magnolia, I liked the idea of showing how people's lives interconnect, but the movie just didn't do anything for me. I didn't care about the characters enough to have any sort of mental or emotional investment in what happened to them.
And I didn't like the frogs.
(I /did/ enjoy Boogie Nights, though.)
