Believe it or not, I was a Fletch fan before I was a Kevin Smith fan.
If you look at the list of Fletch books as listed opposite the title page of any of the books, you'll notice that they don't follow the order in which the books were published. Instead, they follow the order of Fletch's life (if he had lived):

Fletch and the Widow Bradley
Fletch (very different from the movie)
